Officials in Japan say the train crash near Osaka in western Japan has killed as many as fifty seven people, injured more than 400, a commuter train carrying around 580 passengers during morning rush hour Monday smashed into an apartment building near Amagasaki, about 400 kilometers west of Tokyo. Workers are still trying to reach some of the passengers trapped in the wreckage. The accident was Japan's worst in more than four decades. Investigators say speed and driver inexperience may be factors in the crash.
The naming of a new government in Iraq was again delayed Monday prolonging a three-month political vacuum being filled recently with an increase in insurgent attacks across the country. The Bush Administration is pressing Iraqi politicians to end their stalemate. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke by telephone last week to influential Kurdish leader Mustafa Barzani. State Department spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters Monday about the call. "Secretary called Barzani and was an opportunity here for him again about how things are going , but also to make the point that similar to what we have made at the other meetings that we hope the process can move forward because Iraqis, like the rest of the world are looking forward to a government taking power. They can deal with the issues that Iraqis are facing and move on to the next steps in the process. "Mr. Ereli said Ms. Rice also met in Washington with Iraqi Vice President Adil Abdul Mahdi, a Shiite. Iraqi politicians are wrangling over appointments to key ministries. The latest violence in Iraq includes two twin car bombings that killed twenty-two people on Sunday. More than 180 Iraqi security personnel have died in the last six weeks. Monday a US soldier was killed in a roadside bomb blast near Baghdad.
President Bush welcomes Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah to his Texas ranch Monday, the president's ranch, for talks expected to focus on energy prices and the situation in the Middle East. VOA's Paula Wolfson reports from the White House. President Bush is under pressure to do more to bring domestic gasoline prices down. Mr. Bush has stressed there is no magic quick solution to the problem. but as he awaited to greet the Saudi leader, he told reporters he would bring up the matter with Crown Prince Abdullah. Of course I'll talk about energy and the Crown Prince understands that it's very important for there to be a -- to make sure that the price is reasonable. The United States is the world's biggest oil consumer and Saudi Arabia is the biggest producer and all the questions that President dealt with prior to the talks concerned the energy situation. Mr. Bush said he is sure the Saudis are aware of the extent of the burden oil prices are putting on the international economy. Paula Wolfson, VOA news the White House.
Meanwhile the price of a barrel of oil rose Monday as high as twenty six cents to fifty five dollars and sixty five cents a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Romania and Bulgaria have all signed treaties to join the European Union in 2007, provided they complete economic, political and other reforms. Douglas Bakshian has more. Romanian president Traian Basescu says his country will play by the rules and will assume its share of responsibility as a future EU member. He said that there can be no doubt that accession to the Union will represent one of the most important moments in Romania's long European history. The Bulgarian president Simeon Saxe-Coburg also called the accession treaty a milestone for his country and said entering the Union will be like rejoining the European family. Both countries must still complete extensive economic and political reforms to meet EU standards by 2007. Economically they are far behind even the poorest of the existing EU nations. Romania is seen as the least prepared. Almost half of the country's twenty two million people live in the countryside and many are subsistence farmers. Romania and Bulgaria went through difficult transitions after the collapse of communism in 1989. Douglas Bakshian for VOA news Luxemburg.
US law enforcement officials say they have arrested an alleged Afghan drug lord accused of helping the former Taliban regime. Prosecutors have charged Haji Bashir Noorzai with conspiring to import more than fifty million dollars worth of heroin into the United States. | | | |
