TEXT D The inhabitants of Planet Earth have gone crazy for personal wireless communications. Globally, at the end of 1996 there were up to 140 million cellular subscribers and annual growth rates exceed 50 per cent. The future looks even brighter. "We have been working with predictions of 350 ~ 400 million for the year 2000, but we are now prepared to revise these upward. We may be closer to 450~ 500 million by then." Predicts president of Ericsson, "looking further we can see 550 million in five years time." This is a remarkable success story for an industry that is less than 20 years old. The majority of cellular subscribers are still using analog technology, but the last two years have seen a massive and decisive shift to digital. B. know where he was and where he would go. C. check the theory of longitude. D. kill the time with it while there used to be nothing interesting for him at sea. 85. Which is the right statement? A. People used to use stars for calculation. B. The star catalogue complied by John Flamsteed is the most accurate in the world. C. The timepiece made by John Harrison could directly give right locations. D. Today, the observatory cant tell the accurate longitude any more. Now skim the passage and answer the question. The original reason for the R. G. Os (Royal Greenwich Observatory) creation was to try to solve the "longitude problem" -- in other words to work out a method by which a ships captain could calculate his vessels longitude at sea. The first Astronomer Royal. John Flamsteed, complied the most accurate star catalogue of his day as part of this attempt (though the solution was eventually provided by John Harrison, a clock maker who designed a timepiece that was robust enough to withstand the rigors of sea travel, and was thus able to substitute for the stars in the relevant calculations.) Today, the observatory is more concerned with issues like star formation and the origins of quasars -- but it still does world-respected science. A) have a science research with the longitude. B) know where he was and where he would go. C) check the theory of longitude. D) kill the time with it while there used to be nothing interesting for him at sea.

But now for most people, Easter is a secular spring holiday, when everyone hopes to enjoy fine weather, when the days are lengthening fast, when trees are already in bud and leaf , and spring flowers appear, the most welcome of the year -- violets and primroses, daffodils and narcissi. For children, Easter means, more than anything else, Easter eggs or chocolate eggs. A) Many holidays grew out of religion in U. K. B) Nowadays, Easter has little religious significance. There are no nations that have recognized the need for defense counsel in criminal cases. C. The person accused of felony has right to counsel though he is rich. D. In U. S., the poor persons that cannot afford legal expenses can have free counsels. Now scan the passage and answer the questions. Public Defender is a lawyer appointed by a local government to represent indigent persons who are accused of a crime and cannot afford legal fees. It is distinct from provided attorneys who may be assigned by courts to take on particular cases in some jurisdictions. Although the right to counsel varies from country to country, most have now recognized the need for defense counsel in criminal cases. Some form of assigned counsel is usually provided to the needy. The U. S. Supreme Court has upheld the right to counsel of all persons accused of felonies, regardless of their ability to pay. It declared in i963 that every poor defendant charged with a felony is entitled to free counsel as a matter of constitutional right. For any case that involves the possibility of imprisonment, the poor are guaranteed a publicly provided defense lawyer during the police questioning, pretrial hearing, trial, and appeal. TEXT K First read the following question. 89. Why is there no need to worry whether the emergency exit can be opened? A. Because none except airhostesses knows how to open it. B. Because aeroplane doors open outwards. C. Because the airpressure outside the cabin is more than that inside. D. Because man doesnt have enough strength to open emergency exit in a flying plane. 90. We cant infer from the passage that ______ A. aeroplane doors open inwards. B. passenger plane cant fly beyond 30,000 feet. C. emergency exit loses its use in the altitude of 30,000 feet. D. 2.5 tons is an impossible weight for man to lift. Now scan the passage and answer the question. If someone opened the emergency exit on a plane, would everyone be sucked out? There is no need to worry, because the passenger would not be able to get the door to budge. Aeroplane doors open inwards. At 30,000 feet -- the typical altitude or a jet-- the external air pressure is only about three pounds per square inch. The cabin is pressurized to about 11 pounds per square inch. So, for every square inch of door there are three pounds pushing in and 11 pounds pushing out, giving a net outward pressure of eight pounds. If the emergency exit has a total surface of 650 square inches opening the door would be like lifting a two-and-a-half-ton-weight. A) Because none except airhostesses knows how to open it. B) Because aeroplane doors open outwards. C) Because the airpressure outside the cabin is more than that inside. D) Because man doesn't have enough strength to open emergency exit in a flying plane.
A) aeroplane doors open inwards. B) passenger plane can't fly beyond 30,000 feet. C) emergency exit loses its use in the altitude of 30,000 feet. D) 2.5 tons is an impossible weight for man to lift.
